Feels like a twist on the premise of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. I'll follow it for now.

It's a blatant ripoff. Except Tylor has been turned into a suicide-fantasizing, self-deprecating guy with an unexplained
Deus Ex Machina that lets the author write him out of scenarios. The beautiful women Tylor was pining for are now simping for him and crammed into the same squad. He's been given command of a combat squad, not a ship. Not sure if there are aliens. And it starts with flashback, because if most readers were sitting through the boring refrain, they would have dropped the series. Had to throw women in sexualized battle suits out in the beginning as bait, I guess.
