Even better though, consider that despite Tadano's desire to keep things as they are, and his desire to buy himself more time, when he sees that Rumiko is about to bury her feelings and forget about a confession, he still tells her to confess. He indirectly tells her that no matter what the outcome, as long as she tells him how she feels, he's still going to be around for her.

Even though this confession would change things (at least for the two of them), he still urges her to go ahead with it instead of going around hurting. He has indirectly turned her down in the most gentle way he can think of. Now that's impressive.
