I punched マーリック into Google Translate to see how the TTS would pronounce it... Unfortunately it seems Marlick is how it's pronounced.

No, I asked that and Marlick was the one I was recommended to use. I wanted to use something else cause Marlick is a weird name but then i’d be deviating a bit TOO much from the source than I already am.

I apologize if what I'm about to say comes off too rude but I get kinda heated about this stuff, I've rewritten this a few times to make it seem less aggressive and I guess I could have asked AI to make it sound nicer but I hate that shit. So seriously sorry if I accidentally upset you I don't mean to at all. I'm really just ranting about this issue in general.

I will honestly never understand how translating has gone from focusing on the target language to focusing on the source language.

I took some Japanese lessons and my name in Japanese is ブリタニー translated back it would be Buritani (it's Brittany) I can't remember what manga it was but the translator actually translated the name as Buritani and I was so enraged I had to go touch grass. There is something to be said about staying true to the original but only to the extent that it makes sense in the target language (in this case English) マーリック is obviously supposed to be Merrick which is a Welsh name that means fame/power which sounds like a good name for a Holy Mage.

There was a British or Australian translator on Bato that would translate Japanese slang into British/Aussie slang which was both hilarious and honestly a little jarring at first but after getting used to it, it was easier for me to read/keep the immersion than other translators .. EXCEPT FOR NAMES she did the same gosh darn thing you did here. For a historical fantasy based on the French revolution and had Maximilien Robespierre in it with the nickname "Ma" MA!!!!! "Because there's no x equivalent in Japanese" SO?!? MAX IS OBVIOUSLY WHAT HIS NICKNAME SHOULD BE IN AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION!!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬

Honestly Marlick isn't nearly as jarring as Ma was but it's still something that just bothers me in general, when translating you should be focusing on what sounds natural in the target language and for the target audience rather than trying to get a 1-1 match with the source language.

And once again thank you very much for your translation! I'm not complaining about Marlick and if you don't want to change it you don't have to just something to keep in mind for future translations

Hi, thanks for your insight!
I asked a Japanese person in the MD discord what the best English approximation would be and they said i should keep it as Marlick. What I mean was, I didnt want to change it from Marlick to something completely different like "michael" just for the sake of simplicity, so i just asked a friend for help and thats the name we settled on.
i definitely agree with you that TL's should focus on the ***target language and not the source
