His mom called it a date after pointing out that his grandmother would be staying the following weekend so he wouldn't have to take the twins if he waited. He only caught that "date" part a bit later.

more than that, in the case of the girl having a sick mother is understandable she has to take care of her little brother but in the MC case there is no real reason to why 2 parents cant make time for their 3 children, they dont see to have economic issues, it seems work comes first and family second to them. this is a constant theme i see in manga, nobody questions parents abandoning their children for work, this is normalization of parental negligence.
