Okay good sir, you have my attention.

...So Hellsing was actually nonfictional?
Lol.

On a more serious note, the Vatican is a monarchy and back when it was The Papal States it had all the accoutrements of one, including a corps of "troubleshooters" who function as sometimes secret police, sometimes assassins. Antonella Collona Vilasi wrote a hypersensationalized book about this corps and gave it the sinister name "The Entity", but that's basically popular fiction. The corps was in reality just a loose organization of laypeople and clergy with specialized skills in subterfuge and "damage control", originally organized under the militarized orders but later shared between the Jesuits and Dominican lay missions. I mentioned Vatican assassins because it's relevant to the manga, but there are of course other Papal employees who have more direct and public violent functions. The Papal States was a secular state on top of a holy one, so it of course had to have executioners to uphold the law. The last Papal Executioner (Giovanni Bugatti) retired in 1864. He went to confession often - twice per execution according to legends.

Okay, figured as much. I was lowkey expecting tales from Assassins under Pope Francis' order or some shit lmao. But that was really interessting too, so thanks for the information!

why would you look the same way on the date as the killings and confessional
I would assume that they probably met while she was “on the job”, so she would presumably meet her in the disguise she had been using when they first met.

Traditional rite Anglicans and old rite Lutherans still have confessions. That said…

Just want to say that I absolutely love this whole comment. Although I obviously don’t have any evidence to the veracity of anything written, and I likely won’t even remember this in the future, I still thoroughly enjoy reading about stuff like this. Most anything written in a way that impresses upon the reader that the author holds a great deal of knowledge and familiarity on a highly specific subject is enough to make most anything interesting to begin with. On top of that, just learning about the variety and contrasts between all of these shared regional faiths is fun.

Lol. If it makes you feel better, the Popes probably still had a dirty works crew until 1929 when the Lateran Treaty was signed. Mussolini actually made it a point that the Vatican must disband three congregations he suspected as housing these people back then, starting with Doctrine of the Faith (the Inquisition), but the Vatican held firm on keeping those.

If I may ask, how do you know so much about history/ in general?

I don't. I only know those parts of history I have an interest in. If you ask me anything about the Marathas of India I'll just return a blank stare.

Fair enough thanks for the response; on top of being knowledgeable you’re also humble I see. 😇

Very interesting so far. This might scratch a similar itch as Killing Eve for me. The mc doesn't enjoy killing and isn't as charming as Villanelle but that's the most similar thing to this I've ever seen. Thanks for the TL.

Interesting premise, but the author really needed to do some research before going on this religious angle. Either make it realistic or commit all the way to being campy and pretend that was a super special church for assassins/gangs, John Wick style.

Priests aren’t psychiatrists there no law/rule of patient confidentiality, at least when it comes to confessing crimes.
Also weird to make the priest have a daughter, she could’ve been like her niece from a sibling that died or something….
