What era this setting is again ? Like, can this happen today. way back like 19th century feel more right.
I mean, human right violations happen, still. But this is Japan, not China or North Korea right ? Even China at least try to pretend nothing happen despite it is not so secret. But this country straight up have law written to exploit human

Thanks for the translation! This one came out of nowhere, but I'm enjoying it. The wild tonal shifts between thriller, comedy, social commentary etc. somehow work

well, there's television, modern surveillance and riot gear, and cellphones. So modern slums and camps in some imagine country.
Similarish feeling to Palestine

Considering the names/locations so far this is fictional Japan.
Signs in Japanese, room with tatami mat, Benika's last name is Shirafune, the location of Rose's target in ch 1 was very Japanese name, etc.

Modern people are overall often still willing to let others who aren't Their People go through inhumane experiences, particularly if they can't see what's going on. Out of sight, out of mind. Like how little reporting there is of the deaths of migrants trying to get into countries with higher standards of living. There was recently a migrant boat that overturned, a record number of deaths at 700+. Yet no massive outcry about it, no policy changes to deal with this, just business as usual. Or the conditions at various jobs where immigrants work, not to mention the prison population which regularly get forced to work at highly unsafe chicken factories and the like that inflict permanent injuries on them. There was a whole report on prisoner labor conditions, and the details are horrifying. That's stuff going on in the United States by the way (which has a prison population that's more minorities than non-minorities). Plus the crap going on in Palestine. Or hell, even just the inhumane treatment of the homeless population, that's another one, if you want literal physical violence you got that there in shades. There're all kinds of violence going on in modern societies, both physical violence and more subtle forms like economic pressures.

Yet many people want civilized societies, and I agree, just that society as it is now needs changes to reach the point of being actually fully civilized societies.

Man, I see this manga went back to its roots? Goodbye my lil' bout of fluff that happened between then and now. Now I am even more curious about how this all's gonna end!

Thank you for the chapter!

I’m kinda surprised they at least took the time to make it nuance even though everything is exaggerated. And yeah, I’m pretty sure this is an alt-history Japan facing a refugee crisis like in ‘Ghost in the Shell’. They’ve also got out of their way to never specify any other country or culture.

Did we read the same thing? There was no mention of anything of the sort neither did the story make any blanket statements about refugees.
Just sound like you’re projecting.
