Modern people are overall often still willing to let others who aren't Their People go through inhumane experiences, particularly if they can't see what's going on. Out of sight, out of mind. Like how little reporting there is of the deaths of migrants trying to get into countries with higher standards of living. There was recently a migrant boat that overturned, a record number of deaths at 700+. Yet no massive outcry about it, no policy changes to deal with this, just business as usual. Or the conditions at various jobs where immigrants work, not to mention the prison population which regularly get forced to work at highly unsafe chicken factories and the like that inflict permanent injuries on them. There was a whole report on prisoner labor conditions, and the details are horrifying. That's stuff going on in the United States by the way (which has a prison population that's more minorities than non-minorities). Plus the crap going on in Palestine. Or hell, even just the inhumane treatment of the homeless population, that's another one, if you want literal physical violence you got that there in shades. There're all kinds of violence going on in modern societies, both physical violence and more subtle forms like economic pressures.
Yet many people want civilized societies, and I agree, just that society as it is now needs changes to reach the point of being actually fully civilized societies.
