So can someone explain? They are friend with benefits, but also not? I remember reading a few chapters ago that they don’t want to do it with anyone else but they aren’t committed to the fully relationship title? So they are just idiots then?
its just about context. To them “FWB” means people who have sex from time to time but don’t really hang out. and because of bad Ex experiences, “commited” to them means exclusive, controlling, and compromising relationship. In reality they would be FWB or maybe poly in purest definition its just that other people abuse the fwb definition to make themselves feel better about just being hook-ups and they don’t want other people to associate that with them.

I think the thing you might be stuck on is the "they don't want to do it with anyone else", that's what's making it seem like a sort of exclusive thing when that isn't and never has been the thing.

Comes back to the whole description of their relationship being "Whenever, whatever, with whoever we want" they describe it that way back in Chapter's 7 and 7.5, then as is talked about in Chapter 13, they're perfectly fine with the other getting a partner. Just that if/when that happens their friendship goes back to a traditional one.

Yeah it's great how all of them are so casual about it, FMC and Chief are friends and don't mind sharing MC. In the latest ch MC and Chief just working naked at home and having sex casually in between was hilarious :lul:
That last chapter ..latest one alrdy morning and she left him with spare key ..which he put it on his bag

Yeah, because what they have sounds exactly like what I imagine a friend... with benefits... is like. In their case, the "friend" part actually means something and I really struggle to understand the hesitation to call it as such.

They're boyfriend and girlfriend by any reasonable definition, but because they had bad relationships in the past they don't want to use the term. And FWB has negative connotations so they don't want that to use that term either.

Also you can eventually add some swingers stuff but without any of the real world consequences, because it's a manga and fiction is meant to be enjoyable.

Japan doesn't technically have an equivalent to FWB. The closest thing they have, and what they're debating on throughout this manga (in it's original script, as far as I understand), is the label Sex Friend/sefure, which means exactly what you think it means.

Their current situation is that they are way above the sefure status, but they're not a couple either. To us with western relationship views, it's pretty obvious what they are. But to them, it's a bit more nuanced, because they don't really have an exact word for FWB.

They got a great thing going for them. And good on them that they don't care about what others say about their "relationship"

Oh, with that context I totally understand now, thanks.

Wonder why that phrase isn't used here instead of FWB, seen it in other manga.

Thx for the TL

OMG NOT THE ORIGIN STORY BEING READING PARALLEL PARADISE BROUGHT YOU TO HEAR! im telling you Samonella team, post these pages as its own MD manga, im invested into this duo!

To the people who still feel confused about their relationship, just reread what the junior said, at the end of the day, the only opinions that matter to those two is those two. They established what their boundaries are and they are happy with it, no one has the right to complain about it when they are not a part of it. They want to have sex but they only see each other as best friends. No romantic interests from either one of them. They know that just saying they're FWB feels very reductive to say because FWB does have negative conotations associated with it as well as not being fully clear of the dynamics, but thats not their problem. They know what they want from each other and aslong as both are happy then its fine.

To my knowledge when it comes to sex outside of a committed romantic relationship it's like this:

One-night stand = ワンナイトの相手 (wan-naito no aite) which means One Night Partner.

Hook-up/Booty Call/Fuck Buddy = セフレ (Sefure) a shortening of a shortening of セックスフレンド (sex friend), but really means a relationship where sex is the ONLY factor, and there is no social connection outside of that sex.
ALSO, there is a more intentionally vague term used sometimes, when in polite situations and desiring plausable deniability, which is 遊び相手 (asobi aite) which means Playmate. The term's meaning basically depends on who is using it: if it's a literal child or maybe a grandma, they could be talking about someone that they actually just do hobbies and play with. If it's a young adult talking about another young adult that they might be sexually attracted to, it's likely they are using it as a stealthy replacement in a polite setting for saying sefure because they don't want to be that overt and crude about it.

Friend with Benefits = Nothing really exists in Japanese, which is why they came up with their own term (The "Free Friends" thing, I haven't checked the raws to see what they really say). There really isn't a shorthand label for it, because while those relationships do exit, having a casual sexual relationship with a geniune friend is really socially ambiguous and not "okay" enough in wider society to be discussed openly. Hence the whole complexity of trying to break down the situation for someone else by describing it, and how they don't expect most people to be understanding.

Basically, the riskyness of the ambiguity of being in a real FWB situation, where it has a chance to turn really messy if someone catches feelings, the other person actually starts dating someone seriously, a new partner finds out their partner's bestie was also banging them, etc. etc. is not really kosher in Japan. So it's actually MORE okay to have a purely transactional but well-defined sexual relationship like a one-night stand, a regular hookup that you never hang out with otherwise, or hiring a straight-up prostitute, than it is to have a FWB.

So yeah, for English speakers, FWB is partially confusing because that's not what they are saying in the manga, and we have a specific definition of that term, even though Japan doesn't, and it's basically the meaning of the label they create for themselves. Most manga readers ARE familiar with the term Sefure, and that it's closer to a Booty call than a FWB, so IMO that would be a better term to use to translate セフレ into. Either Sefure, or Booty Call/Hookup/Fuck Buddy.

That nuance of the term FWB basically not existing in Japan, and it being a pretty big deal to have their own label they created to use, and that the co-worker actually not only comprehending their relationship but being okay with/not judgemental of it, imo gives a lot more impact to this chapter.

jp pixiv dict, セフレ includes the meaning used in the west and just people who only meetup for sex
weblio jp pretty much says the same thing, its used to describe a 友人関係 in this dictionary

Merry Christmas everyone!

We have been traveling all day to visit SBs brother in Japan for the new years!
☺️☺️☺️

I hope everyone got many gifts! 🤗🤗🤗

Also I talked it over with SalmonellaBro and I will be making a short limited story of our origins and how we got to where we are at today! Let us know if you'd be interested in reading it! (We suck at drawing 😢😢😢 so we will just make it a story book style 🫡🫡🫡 starting from our first encounter back in 2012!)

Oh god, not Parallel Paradise... Don't read it... I'm stuck with it because of sunken cost.
That's a long manga to get mired in, sounds like it's better to not even start at this point :D

But I know the feeling. When you're always one shit chapter away from saying "fuck this" and setting it to Dropped, no alerts. Sometimes you gotta do it, man. Life is short, there's always another manga to read.

Hi, I'm rmrs, and I made it to 200 chapters in Rent-a-GF before I took a look at my life and dropped the series. You too can be free, the power has been within you all along!
