Didn't you want to rephrase that that bastard would receive better punishments than death?

It's fun reading the idiotic comments who think she's here to *save* this guy. Sort of. Fun and a little infuriating at the stupid.

I, the superior intelligent human who read the novel, laugh at all of these idiots who are just reading the manga and therefore are, at this point, thinking what the author wanted them to think and feeling what he wanted them to feel.

@Laundrysauce

They really aren't though. To begin with, when he says he's more skilled, he's talking about with a sword or in melee, what they were doing when he said that. He was a fire mage, it isn't surprising that he isn't the strongest swordsman. More so, you shouldn't forget that, in the published version, the mc's old and young selves are two different people, that the old self merely passed information to the young self. It's like having a textbook memorized, he still has to practice it. So it makes complete sense for the mc to struggle with people who are already trained at this time, especially in areas his old self didn't even excel at.

furthermore, as Waoweewoo put, she's definitely not saving him here. For everyone (but him) it's better that he's actually punished rather than getting a quick death where no one sees or knows about anything he did. The conflict and the reasons behind it need to be put on display for Zeff's benefit. Remember that Zeff isn't that powerful yet so he can't just force his way through and kill people, even though he's right, without making his case to the existing powers and law-enforcement. In which case, it's better that he's captured and dealt with openly, and not left as a law-enforcement official's corpse with a mystery killer. She's actually helping Zeff here by making sure no one mistakes the villain here.

heck, what's happening here is kinda like what happened in the "How a street thug killed a god" table top story ended. A kinda "Rather than kill you, I killed the worlds faith in you. The world will do the rest." thing.

>Manga tries really hard to leave the impression she's there to save him.

For those not understanding that killing this dude would be bad, please read @Meridis comment, it's pretty good and without spoilers... I think (I don't read the novel).

Those mocking (jokingly mostly) us "manga only" readers for thinking that she's trying to protect her colleague... the author added some bad dialogue here to make us believe that.
From what I understand from the comments, she just doesn't want Zeff being judged for killing a government official, but if that was really the case, she wouldn't spout shitty dialogue like:
"Could you leave it at that and put away your sword, Zeff? He's still technically my comrade, so I can't completely ignore this."
And blocking the MC's sword, and putting her body between him and that bad dude. Her actions are clearly agressive, and her words are worst.
There's no way to "misunderstand" what she means. "Leave it at that" is like her saying "just let him go free, forget and forgive what he's done, you punished him enough".
And her positioning and agressive stance clearly state "I won't hesitate to fight you to protect this guy".

If the mangaka wanted to leave us with a cliffhanger, with us not knowing what her intentions are, something like this would have been better:
"Please put away your sword, Zeff. He's still technically a part of law enforcement."
Then follow that in the next chapter with something like:
"I don't want his blood on your hands to make people doubt you."

Now I'm not curious about what will happen next (probably a short fight with him losing, then her staying her blade and correcting the "misunderstanding").
What I'm curious about is what kind of convoluted way will the author chose to make sense of this mess.

@aFFi Typical adaptation, always missing pertinent info, I think the resulting train wreck from killing him has just as much potential to entertain though.
