@LoktarOgar There is a solution to the low resolution. Run the scans (pre-cleaning or post-cleaning, doesn't matter) through Waifu2x which uses AI upscaling through your GPU. Also has fabulous noise removal without destroying the screentones: https://github.com/nihui/waifu2x-ncnn-vulkan

On the real though, we need more heroines with Chun-Li legs. I can’t think of any off the top of my head, except mayyybe the girl in History’s Strongest Disciple. If any other people of culture know something I don’t, please share :p

Whenever I've tried Waifu in the past I haven't been impressed with the results. Doesn't really matter anymore for this anyway, it's just a (re?) upload since apparently Meraki took it down from their site.

@MajinCry Waifu2x was hit or miss for me. Some images scale well while other images scale almost identically to most commonly used scaling algorithms. I find that the aspect ratio of the image you wish to scale matters a lot and scaling a manga page doesn't work as well as scaling an equilateral image of a single character.

For example. I've seen video2x used to scale dvd rips of miyazaki films to 4k which is impressive... on youtube. Compare that to MadVR that pretty much upscales the original video in realtime playback on my desktop mediaplayer, video2x starts to look a lot less impressive. Although to be fair, there is a reason why NGU Sharp has been such a standard for so many years. Yeah Waifu2x might beat it in terms of raw benchmarks but you probably might not perceive the difference when viewing them side by side and NGU Sharp is way faster.

@Hobnobs That's not been the case at all in my experience. When you use black and white manga raws, it looks fabulous. I did that for the scans of Tatoeba, as well as My Home Hero. The upscaling turned out perfectly. Even tried it on these ancient scans of Hokuto No Ken, and it also worked fine. It's probably different for video frames, but for manga it works as expected.

@MajinCry I don't know, from my understanding waifu2x was not trained on black and white manga pages. When testing this I found that my default photo editor upscales were pretty much visually identical to waifu2x on the manga pages that I tried upscaling but as I said before when using an image that is closer to what waifu2x was trained on especially if it is in color (picture with a single character in color being the main focus of the image) waifu2x does have a significant scaling advantage.

I know people have trained esrgan using the manga109 dataset but I don't know how effective it is in practice as the people I saw using it are funnily enough not using it for upscaling manga. Of course one could build their own manga dataset by using manga images that weren't made publicly available and have better results. Although distributing the program after training it like that could potentially put you into legal trouble if you can't prove those hundreds of thousands of images you used to train it with were in fact purchased by you (assuming your training material was pirated of course).

Oops, didn’t mean to send the comment twice. Had been trying to send it right when the database went down, so I clicked send a few times.
