Many thanks!

The outline thing to replace hyphen wasn't obvious, but I kinda like it now that I'm made aware.

It really depends on the region/culture. In Hawaii it's very common to refer to an older person, whether it be family friend, acquaintance, or even a stranger as Uncle or Auntie. Calling them Sir or Ma'am is a little too formal unless you're in some kind of customer service position.
As in Eastern Europe, especially in the past. But now it will sound a bit mocking if you are over 20. That's why most people use age-appropriate formalities like "young man" to a younger guy to be polite.

Good luck on admissions!
Remember, college is for connection!
Knowledge is the same no matter where you learn it, we try for quality schools to surround ourselves with quality people - ivy league is just matching up old money with new smarties. So don't stress too much about grades (C's get degrees!); instead focus on finding two awesome sauce friends (ride or die!), cuz they'll be what gets you through the crazy times.
