@Oinari - in the novel, that was Yuna's first thought, but when she visited the orphanage, it was obvious she wasn't.
@kingkarus - it's rare to see a fat man who isn't some kind of corrupt. And that one looked pretty corrupt, yeah.

@kingkarus Yep, definitely him. Went to the lord to request for an "increase in monetary support", had this request accepted, then left grinning about being able to "let the money roll in".
We can deduce that the lord was informed - perhaps directly, perhaps indirectly - of the worsening situation of the orphanage, so he agreed to increasing the support/funding. After all, he does care about his populace. He's entirely unaware, though, that the fat bastard who's supposed to deliver the money is instead embezzling all of it.
Honestly speaking, though, this is stupid by the greedy noble. You don't embezzle ALL of the money, you embezzle some of it. If anyone were to speak to the orphanage's director, find out that the orphanage doesn't receive any funding and then ended up mentioning it in the outside world, the lord would probably learn about it very quickly. If you only embezzle some of the money, then the orphanage will have barely enough/barely not enough food, so you can claim that costs are rising slowly, so you continue to receive increased funding and embezzle slightly more each time. (E.g. orphanage needs 100 credits of funding, you embezzle 20. Orphanage now has 80 credits and is struggling. Orphanage gets another 20 credits of funding, you embezzle 10, etc.)

@Voij

no major spoilers bellow. only a few small once.

yeah he is kind of stupid to do it that way, its to easy to spot and he gets punished for doing it pretty soon.

he actually have a reason to why he thought he could( and might have ) gotten away with it, but it was busted by Yuna simply because she made the lord realise it too fast.
but it's something that is mentioned as a side note in the novel like 200 chapters down the line AFTER his head rolls.
( the novel seems to be have been written arc by arc with whatever the author thought was cool and is kind of a mess if you read the author notes...just like my spoilers 👺 ).

long story short, he have family that is connected to the royal family ( who actually isn't asswipes unlike a lot of other nobles who will feel the bear´s wrath later on )
and if he had gotten the money out off town and quit his job before he was found out he would have gotten away with it "because politics".
its a stupid plan, but it was A plan..... so he was not quite as stupid as he first appeared. he was betting his life, fortune and family honor on the fact the lord was to busy to deal with it in time.
*incert scooby doo reference about meddling kids here * 👻

That's not really about his plan, though. IIRC they find a lot more crimes, and bodies, when they investigate him and his family. So I think that was someone else' plan to get him out, that whole house seems to have a fatal level of stupid.

The author of the WN writes chapter to chapter and sometimes doesn't even have the next chapter planned, for example when he was at this point in the WN he said he hadn't decided who the villain was going to be just yet. Expect a lot of super convenient skills for her situation to be earned in an earlier fight and not get mentioned right until she needs them, it happens numerous times.

I like the author's honesty. It's like one of the charming points of the novel lol. He even admitted plot mistakes and stuffs, which is of course not shown in the manga version
