I'm sorry but I can't stand it. Elytra only acts a protection of the real wings coz like birds, insect wings are very fragile. They don't help with flight nor are they wings.
While you are correct in saying they aren't wings, they did use to be wings, just like marine mammal flippers used to be forelegs. In some other insects they still remain as proper wings, such as the famous dragonflies, the masters of flying. Well, I'm sure you know all of this and more already. In any case, in my native tongue, they are even called coverwings, literally translated, since the Greek term wasn't borrowed like in English.
