Voting on things that affect the entire country? Fine.
Drinking a happy little drink? Verboten!
Such a backwards country.

Being an adult comes with responsibilities, not just privileges.

It's indeed backwards you are considered ready to participate in choosing the very future for your country, but you can't drink a beer after a hard day of work. How can you be judged to know what's best for the country if it's assumed you can't even decide what's best for yourself in the simplest of things? I drink very little, so it wouldn't even have mattered to me in the least, but out of principle I'd have given my vote to some asshat at the ages of 18 and 19, just to protest against such a stupid system. But then again, I live in Europe, so there's no such stupid system, haha.

Some people ĺike to think 18 is a magic number that changes a person from who they were when they were 17 years and 364 days old.
LEGALLY it IS a Magic Number. Societally it would be frowned upon for them to get together while she's still a JK.

Pretty sure the legal age for marriage for female in Japan is 16, are they not?
It apparently was revised in 2022 so that under 18 requires the consent of the parents.

U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Japan

Article 731 to 737 of the Japanese Civil Code stipulates the following requirements:
  • The male partner must be 18 years of age or older and the female partner must be 18 years of age or older.
  • A person who is under 18 years of age cannot get married in Japan without a parent’s approval.
  • Most people related by blood, by adoption or through other marriages cannot get married in Japan.

What you need to know about the revision to Japan's sex crime law

Under the separate new revised sex crime laws in Japan 16 is now the nationwide age of consent (vs the previous 13) but in all except the Marcus Island and Okinotori Island territories it was already that high due to local corruption of minor laws and likely continues to be higher where not surpassed (such as Tokyo where it was 18). The revised laws also made non-violent rape, including the drunk-at-the-club-welcome-party-and-raped-by-senpais and the blackmailed-by-embarrassing-pictures tropes, nationally illegal where they were not before.

"The changes were sparked in part by a case in Nagoya in which a father who raped his 19-year-old daughter was acquitted by a court which ruled that while the daughter did not give her consent, she did not resist violently. The decision prompted nationwide protests."

And we're not speaking legally here. The user up there seemed personally, morally disgruntled by her less-than-18 age.

"Readiness for relationships", as much as it can be measured at all, depends on one's life experience, personality, and probably a slew of other factors, and it's only indirectly tied to age. The only reason the law has a specific number is because it would be too messy otherwise. And yet people treat it like it has some moral weight.

(if someone tries to misread that as "age is just a number", I swear I'm gonna bonk you)

Not sure how I feel about the fact that she's had a crush on him since she was 17. Japan be wilding
There's nothing wrong with someone under 18 having a crush on an adult. That happens all the time all over the world. If it were the other way around, that could be cause for concern.

Uh the U.S is the exact same dude except it's 21. Also you say "responsibilities" but no one takes those seriously anymore when it comes to voting.

Well, when it comes to fictional characters, it kind of is. The author types one age for them, thinks they have the maturity of another age (which is often different from the first), and there's one age they act like in the actual story. There's usually no "right" age, and like the premise is, they're fictional anyway.

Then you have situations like this:

Raphtalia (ラフタリア)

Age: 10 (mentally), 17 (biologically)
Height: 5'6" (168 cm)
