Because that's telling the girl you like that you went on a date with another girl
Well, he himself was unsure whether it was meant as a date, so just tell Natsumin that it was a friend's outing, simple as.
I get Akiyoshi's hiding it because he realized Lemon hid it.
But ideally Akiyoshi's ideal move would be either directly tell Natsumi, OR vaguely answer, AND IN BOTH SITUATIONS immediately tell Lemon "oh hey, I told Natsumi we did so-and-so. Feel free to clear it up with her, thanks!"
Oh yeah, that makes sense.

Call me old fashioned, but a date is when it's clearly stated to be that by one or both parties.
I think that's just a bit of a cultural difference here. While not universal, in Japan a guy and a girl who like one another going out some place together alone is generally considered a date. It's definitely not ALWAYS a date, but the ambiguity is there.

I don't think that's a modern phenomenon, it comes from old fashioned ideas that men and women are seperated by culture and that being together was inherently romantic. I'd say that the idea that a guy and a girl being together not likely being romantic is a relitively modern concept.

He didn't really see it as a date, only Lemon did. But it's still him going out all day with another girl, just the two of them. Not just another girl, but a girl Natsumi and Sunao are both well acquainted with, that he has a complicated history of feelings with, and a girl he's in the body of half the time. So even if, to him, it wasn't a date, he likes Natsumi and is prone to overthinking things, so it's only natural he wouldn't want to tell her.

Really, this is a giant mess and Natsumi deserves better than to be dragged around by Sunao and Lemon like this.
