Feels like we missed a chapter... The one where they go from "knowing nothing about where Maomao is" to "Shi clan has her!".

... Okay there was the bit where they found out that Rouran was switching out with her maids. Still, even if you supposed that Shi clan was involved in Maomao's disappearance, then they would have no idea whether Maomao is still alive, or where she might be. (She could be stashed somewhere in the capital, or with some affiliate house.)
Read Ch. 73. It also doesn't make sense to stash Maomao in the capital where she can escape and easily return to the palace after going out of their way to kidnap her. Loulan also won't hide in the capital risking to be found so the most logical destination is the Shi clan's territory. Occam's razor and all that.

Whether they know Maomao is alive or not doesn't matter in the slightest. Lakan would still want to find her no matter what and the war is happening regardless of Maomao's condition. If they find Maomao good, if not they'll just keep looking. That's all there is to it.

Seems like everyone with half a brain can tell these motherfuckers are going to get massacred so I'm curious what is exactly their master plan? Just having a lot of guns?
not being noticed and striking first. theoretically if they take the emperor then his armies mean jack and shit.reminder revenge is the endgoal even if they die after they still "won"

I like getting Jinshi’s inner dialogue while Lakan is chewing him out but this adaptation left out an important detail. What Lakan was saying, knowing who he was saying it to was grounds to be killed.
That’s why his uncle was rushed into the room to deescalate, and push his nephew to show respect.
Imo the emphasis on jinshi’s inability to refute him took away from that tension.
All that said. Still loved this chapter! It’s such an iconic part of the story!

Kind of unfair to not include the fact that Luomen adopted and raised Maomao in the relationship chart, don't you think?

You are right, thinking back to all the people he loves he has a really high degree of weakness to them... I would even call it a little worship.

They are people who in some way or other, had gone around his peculiarities, Luomen that taught him the tricks to deal with people and nurtured his talents, Fengxian the love of his life who was just as cunning and intelligent as him, and Maomao the greatest treasure of his life that he can naturally see her face but that is forever distant of him because of his mistakes.
I love how giddy and bubbly he gets about it too, just talking about his games with his wife or getting to play with Maomao.

Rakan already had suspicions, remember the chapter he met with Ah-duo (on disguise) and Shisou, he showed the feifa design, he already knew something was going on, and went full on provocation to make Shisou start moving, then Maomao dissapears who was sniffing around, and next Loulan went AWOL (lol). As to where they were hiding, He probably already knew where the castle was, and that is the place most likely to hole up and defend themselves.
But there is no real reason for them to believe she is alive, more than hoping she is, casue i don't think Maomao can serve as a bargaining chip as a comoner, other than being a servant to Jinshi and the unrecognized child of Rakan.

Edit: and this too xD
Maomao practically dropped a 'this is the culprit' with her hidden message, then it became pretty much confirmed with Rouran's escape + Shi Shou's disappearance.

IIRC this was originally supposed to be the end of the story but the author decided to continue it because it was popular
Oh man i am glad and fearful at the same time... glad we have more Maomao and afraid cause i have seen so many series go to shit because of just greed.

Wait so what's the relationship between maomaos real father and adoptive father? Are they actually related uncle and nephew or is it an adoption thing?

In the chart there should be a line connecting Mao Mao and Rahan with "Step-Siblings" labeled between them.
They are not step-siblings, they are adoptive siblings and cousins.

Aside from that, this was probably done intentionally to avoid clutter. Ruo Men would also require a line to Mao Mao, since he is both her adoptive father and her great uncle.

See Chapter 37. Ruo Men is Rakan's uncle and thus Mao Mao's great uncle as she mentioned in Chapter 69. Ruo Men was more of a father to Rakan than his own father, which is why he respects him so much.

I've already read this in LNs but my god this chapter is raw. Fucking powerful delivery along with strong paneling. Way to make grand reveals.

This adaptation is a true delight.

you mean the officially translated novel?
Yes.
I've read the JP webnovel and the official EN light novel, and there are changes between them that I generally think are improvements.

What's done wrong between the JP light novel and the EN version? I haven't noticed anything PTSD inducing at all.
From the English side of things, the translator is (in my opinion) pulling shit out of his ass. I couldn't get past the first volume of the official English translation because of this. I had a considerably easier time reading the fan translation of the WN, despite it having its own problems not relevant to the discussion (which you'll have no issue spotting should you go read a few chapters of it).

The following information is what I managed to piece together as a non-translator, so this is 2nd hand information.
The PTSD inducing part are there are translation mistakes. Pretty much every other chapter has them.
That by itself isn't that bad, since mistakes do happen... until you realize they've been pointed out to the translator and remained in regardless. If anything, the translator doubled down on his mistakes.
We've come to a point where people are just no longer pointing them out, because they know they won't get fixed.

For example, the official English translation for the novel part of this chapter has the following translation error (attributing the sentence to Rou Men instead of Rakan):
Note: Luo Men -> Ruo Men (Rakan's uncle) | Lakan -> Rakan (the general)
羅半が付け加えるように、先ほど見せてきた資料をあらためて机上に広げる。 加えて壬氏の暗殺未遂、楼蘭の後宮からの逃亡がある。 「膿は早めに出し切るべきです」 その言葉に羅門は心を痛めた顔をする。心優しき医官には、たとえ反逆とはいえ戦ごとは快く思えないだろう。 そして、羅漢がそれを壬氏に申し出ることはなにを意味するのか。
He once again spread the materials he had shown Jinshi earlier on the desk.
And that was not even to mention the attempted assassination of Jinshi or Loulan’s flight from the rear palace.
“Corruption ought to be rooted out and destroyed as quickly as possible,” said Luomen—even though he winced as he spoke.
The kindhearted doctor was cut to the quick by the thought of war, even against rebels.
Moreover, he knew what it meant for Lakan to make this request of Jinshi.
I don't think you even need to know Japanese to see something is wrong there, as the translation contradicts itself.

Funnily enough, MTL gets it right.
"The pus should be drained as soon as possible."

At those words, Rou Men wore a pained expression. As a kind-hearted physician, he likely could not view conflict favorably, even if it was in response to treason.

And what would it mean for Rakan to propose this to Jinshi?

This was just one example. There are plenty more I can go hunt for in our series channel. But you do see the problem now, right?
I honestly don't know what to attribute these to. Is it incompetence? Is it a matter of pride? I don't know.
J-novel's other translations do not have these kinds of issues for the most part, so this seems to just be a problem with this translator in particular.
Honestly, what a fucking oversight from J-novel for a series like this to end up with a translation/translator like that.

I'm expressing my dissatisfaction using my wallet, and I hope you are too.
Though, given how popular this series is, I doubt it'll make a dent.

Man, I was stocking up on the volumes and planning on reading it later... Surely it isn't as bad as Re:Monster's novel tl.
Oh yes, the LN and the WN have different plots on some parts right?
There are different parts yeah. The finale of this current arc is somewhat changed from the WN to the LN.
I'm not familiar with Re:Monster's novel TL, so I can't say.
All I can say is that I did the same mistake as you where I bought a few volumes without actually reading them first, only to then regret having done so :haa:

what's the consensus in the kusuriya discord for the novel? Are there other people still persevering to finish the J-Novel TL of the LN, are they reading fan-tl(if there is one), or are they all reading the WN?

don't worry. the series will get into a little slump after this climax, but it quickly picks back up later on. be aware that the manga is currently adapting the 4th volume out of the 11 volumes (as of today) of the LN. this story is huge and I really doubt the manga (or the anime) will ever adapt everything so if you really want to get the whole story I suggest looking for the LNs (and learning Japanese lmao)

But why? The country is at peace.. no tyrannical ruler as well... What are they displeased with?

"The empire, long divided, must unite; long united, must divide. Thus it has ever been"

In other other words, some motherfucker's always trying to ice skate uphill.

I'm interested in how the other version handles this arc.
