Obviously this isn't a question of intelligence, but one of character and ethos.

• First, yes this is a bit impulsive. But we already know that Maomao can be impulsive.
• Mostly she's driven by otaku level apothecarial curiosity, but she also has a small bent towards justice and generosity.
• The boy got in trouble because he was trying to help her escape. Sui Rei and Rouran both went out of their way to save her from the old hag (by claiming that she can make an immortality potion).
• On top of that, she knows that if the empire arrives, they'll all be put to the sword. And Maomao feels pain at that.
• And while Maomao is generally cautious about staying away from aristocracy, that's only a surface thing, her actual feelings are that she doesn't care about someone's ranking. So, she has not innate fear of standing up to authority.

Her motivation is complicated here, but it's very consistent with her character.

I feel like i should also point out that for all her complaints about the old lady MaoMao has never once called her shitty. The contrast is immaculate.

no, the water pit is just a type of cage that's kept half filled with water and is typically so small that it prevent anyone from sitting or standing straight. Any inmate inside will be constantly tortured by the cold water, cramp and potentially a host of other problems common with other type of stockades. It would be a dead sentence in the current weather though, that was partly why Mao Mao spoke up to save the guard back then.

Good on you, Maomao. Cruel nobles like Shenmei are so stupid. If you go around terrorizing and antagonizing everyone around you, you're only hurting yourself. No one will be truly loyal, making even more likely at some point, someone will be willing to make you pay and take you out. There may not be serious consequences if everyone supposed to protect you will just look the other way, glad to be rid of you.

Shenmei must think she's untouchable since she's the actual noble between her and her husband, even if he's the one with actual military power. But at some point, someone like her is hurting your standing more than it elevates it. Especially since they have a daughter in Lou Ran, so Shenmei is expendable.

Power is a spell so easily broken, so it's infuriating to watch this many people allow themselves to be miserable for this overgrown child.

The volume releases sometimes have pages organized a bit differently (for example, a few pages moved from 79.2 to 79.1).
