In the LN, the author didn’t bother giving an explanation. Here’s the excerpt from the LN for this chapter:

Presumably, the cloth had simply happened to come off the
mirror that night. The polished surface of the mirror had caught the
moonlight and projected its image on the wall. The result had been
the floating face. A “ghost” created by sheer coincidence.
