@LullabiesLullabyes nope. He takes medicine to stop his "masculine features" from showing. As such, he looks feminine. Basically, chemical castration. He does it willingly as the true first son of the current Emperor whose first wife (and Jinshi's mother) had a certain doctor (Mao Mao's adopted father) switch her son with that of the Empress Dowager. She did this to save her son's life.

Basically, Jinshi is the secret crown Prince who is hiding in plain sight waiting for another royal heir. His father put him in charge of the harem and it's in his own interest if he doesn't want to get stuck ruling to get himself some male siblings. (Get his Dad some serious booty calls.)

The Emperor isn't worried about an heir because he already has one, and by having him secretly appear as the harem chief eunuch, his heir is protected against potential assassination (which clearly frustrates the Hell out of Jinshi—hence, his lamenting that his uncle didn't survive so he could be passed off as the heir).

Mao Mao's biological sperm donating parental unit appears to have some ulterior motive in all of this—whether assassinating people, ranking up his daughter through trials of different kinds or more. He appears extremely pleased that his daughter is beloved by Jinshi (the secret and extremely competent crown Prince who is directly sabotaging his title).

It's all rather fascinating seeing what ultimate goal Mao Mao's biological father has percolating. He's got some machinations going down, but they are presently unknown.

@Ironclad It still possible if the three of them had nearly 8 month pregnancy period. Even if the most ideal is 9 month, when summed in in total, it still more near 2 year than 3. We don't know the exact detail of day. But believe me, my 4 older siblings just have approximately 1 year age gap

@magykpanda Well, technically, he could be both scheming & doting. Not really a restriction there. He may well do both, but as to some series of master plans—this could all turn out to be means to get his daughter on the throne as the competent Empress. He may be test-challenge training her (learning through survival or trial by fire). Entirely plausible given what we know of him & his tendencies towards his daughter (like, notice how he didn't clear up the understandings? Is that intentional? Why didn't he send financial assistance to Mao Mao and her mother? Again—he looks to be testing her/training her/raising her by fire).

he's actually got this biological issue like the rest of his family. He's obsessed and has some sort of mental disorder. This results in anyone but those really close to him, being forgotten entirely or just labelled as pieces in a game. The dad is just really awkward and is highly against MaoMao hooking up with Jinshi. This resulted in Jinshi being worked to death in order to prevent him from seeing her. You will also learn that this guy is the first barrier to getting closer to MaoMao, so Jinshi has to best him in a board game or w.e they call it here before he can request for MaoMao's hand. You also learn how the cast feels for each other up to the recent chapter in the web novel
