Ok, I’m not going to pretend like I’m a big fan of the writing, but going through the comments it feels like nobody is actually reading what is being said.

Yes, the MC wants to avoid getting killed as Ultos but the only advantage he has is his knowledge of the game. If he deviates too far from the original plot then he loses that advantage, and he only just started the game’s prologue.

He has already made some strides to improve the general opinion of him but all that stuff up till now wasn’t relevant to the actual plot. His interaction with the heroine and his presence at the Mayor’s Diddy party is, that’s why he’s going through with them, otherwise he’d just completely change the game’s original setup and would be going into the rest of the story completely blind.

As someone who read a half chapter ahead in the raws, its a little less bad than it looks even if it's a bit contrived.

He does all of this, then he suddenly snaps into sobriety and starts larping as a "mysterious character who know more than he lets on" by bullshitting some deep quotes. He essentially wants the heroine to properly start her hero's journey by painting the image that all nobles are corrupt, keeping her safe even if it means making himself into a lame douchebag for now.

I get that he wants to be able to predict the future, but that is foolish given the most important parts of the story. You want to be Sieg? Act like him or help him. Heck, be a better protagonist and don't follow the general narrative. It is kind of funny that he can't see outside the side points to see the main arch. Oh well, it will be interesting to see how long it takes him to get it ^-^;

People are rightly calling this retarded. The people claiming a failure to properly read on the critics' behalf are missing a very, very important fact:

The MC is in a real, alternate world based on the game he knows--not in that game itself.

The MC, in taking this action (and others, but the stupidity is more flagrant with this action than any so far), is fully expecting to be able to force the reality he's in to follow the events of the game that he wants to see come to pass while averting those he doesn't--in other words, he wants to cherry-pick which parts of the game the world will and won't follow. Anyone with a modicum of brainpower can tell you that that's not how reality works, and indeed--someone already explained how:

The butterflies have flapped their wings already, he can't go back to the plot... which would result in his death anyway... so this is pretty much just a useless comedy moment.

Sure, the author can railroad the story into happening in exact accordance with what the MC is written to want AND expect, but then you end up with absurd inconsistencies like what's seen in this chapter (and if the MC's expectations are met, it will still clearly show the author's influence over the story--it will not come across as developing naturally/logically). That being said, the MC believes he's got the player's guide to a world's entire timeline, when--in truth--he's only had its instruction manual; worse, he isn't even consistent in this belief--that's how he ended up slimming down in the first place.
