Captain didn't do much for me. I feel like the author legitimately didn't know what to do with this character, and she became sidelined for a long while. And since they author couldn't figure out what to do with her, sacrifice her to give Mami some development.

Well, then they killed off the captain, perhaps one of the few characters in the main group who had some characterization (albeit not much) and wasn't a horrible character. Furthermore, at the moment, the characters in the new group can only be summed up as repugnant or submissive/totally useless, the only one who stands out being the big guy.
