I'm personally into tarot and card reading, but mostly because they are great tools for doing "mental health counseling" for some people. The trick is not reading the cards, but reading the person, and using the cards you draw as "support" for the narrative that will help them the most. The cards all have very definitive meaning by themselves, but that's why most readings use a combination of many cards (5~6 is usually a sweet spot) so that you can twist and adapt your reading for pretty much any context. Of course, commercial card reading is rarely as helpful... but having someone that do it in a friend circle or family, that can be very nice, when they have good intentions. I was lucky that I had a friend like that, and I started doing it myself when I moved away and got into new circles. But as a teen, she saved me a bunch of times, using her readings to support me when I didn't believe anyone could support me anymore. Just teh mystique and "what if..?" effect made me grip to them. I didn't realize back then, but I can clearly see now what she was doing. Q_Q
Of course, it's a tool, and like all tools it can be misused, even if the user has good intentions. My mother is also very into card reading, but she always let her overwhelming negativity slip into it, and she ALWAYS see people's death in her reading, and she managed to "predict" correctly too many times, she even think she's cursed.
