Well, this was a VRMMO world. The fact that it's used to channel magic is why it's a "staff." There's a weapon class in RuneScape called "bladed staves" for example. They're distinct from the spears in that they're used to cast magic in addition to being melee weapons, whereas the spears are just melee weapons.

@Roadrunner9000 magic = cheap tricks, its similar to some games where you got races that hate magic users or distrust magic, e.g Elder Scrolls Nords are quite distrustful of magic and scorn magic users.
the knight hates ths MC because hes a mage but when he saw he had such skill in normal combat arts he got even more pissed, because to a knight like him its just unthinkable.
