Finally figured out why this art style looks weird.

SAME FACE SYNDROME

I agree...but I do have to admit that the artist does a fantastic job of portraying manic joy on the faces of the demons the MC kills. It's not the most unhinged smile I've seen in manga, but considering the simplistic art style (however well-executed), it's surprisingly emotive.
