It's because he's loud and obnoxious, yeah. And it's stupid to insist on protecting the MC when he knows he's weaker and there's no point to it.

Why is he protecting Takeru when he is clearly weaker than him, and he is aware that he is weaker

He is being absolutely true to his word, even though it's stupid. Such inflexibility makes him reliable but also easily manipulated. A "slave of duty" can be pressed back into his pirate indenture by the oddity of a leap year, against all reason, after all.

He committed suicide by jumping off the school. I'm guessing that he died and his body was just a husk kept on by life support.
