One of the most idiotic takes I've seen: how dare a guy who writes "for kids" write something pornographic or, in this case, borderline porn? Theodore Seuss Geisel, AKA Dr. Seuss, made pornographic/erotic works. Tons of authors got their start with 18+ material that makes this story look like Cat in the Hat, and some of them have continued, either with doujins of their own work or others'. CLAMP started out making Yaoi. You'd be shocked if you looked up the anime and games the VAs for your favorite kids' series did. There's nothing remotely unusual about a person doing work in kids', shounen, seinen and 18+ at different times or even at the same time. If you can't see a story the same way upon learning that its creator, an adult with adult knowledge and experience, has made works outside that area, then the problem isn't the creator.
