I can't remember what chapters it was where he was talking to the wolves in the "safe zone". I just remember him talking to a really messed up looking one while writing notes when it finally clicked to him that it was asking him to die.
Edit: Chapter 184 covers him talking to a limbless Valian until he understood the language, but eventually having to kill it so he could get more food.
