It is one thing to kill when enemies are a genuine threat to you. But when they're so far beneath you that they pose no real danger whatsoever, slaughtering them mercilessly is not a sign of strength. To put it another way... if Superman, for whom almost no one is an actual threat, would be horrified by what you've done, you're probably doing something wrong.

@tuatara1 Yeah, it's not a sign of strength, it's a sign of wisdom. If the MC left the robbers alive, they would just keep coming after him, possibly even resorting to taking hostages if they thought it would be of some use. Not to mention this shouldn't have been the first time they went after fellow adventurers, especially considering the leader's attitude. If he left the orcs alive, they would just go raping and killing other people who aren't as strong as the MC.
