The manga author protects the MC, but really, he should verify none of his gear was substituted as well. It should be re-checked to verify it is in working order as it was so valuable that substitutions would be worth doing just to delay any pursuit or claim.

He will strip the gear from any adventurer not strong enough to prevent it with legal sale via magically enforced contract. Just get the person drunk, or hypnotized, or tranquilize gas the air with a skill. Then drive them out of town after getting their griffon and other property.
