Oh. It's not a love triangle (or maybe it is)

It's Dude + Ice Princess with Tomboy Wingman?

That's a dynamic we don't see very often.

Yes. At the same time, for fans of manga and anime, the downside is that all these rules are basically untranslatable into English. So, if you go for a more "formal" translation, a lot of this part of Japanese culture gets lost. The only way to preserve it is by translating into a more "Japanized English", keeping the honorifics and other Japanese terms. Some people prefer a more formal translation, but others (myself included) prefer a "Japanized English" version exactly so these cultural nuances in manga and anime stories aren’t lost.
I don't like the translation of onii-san/onee-san when used to respectfullyrefer to someone unrelated and just a little older being translated to Big Bro and Big Sis. I'd much rather have Mister or Miss. Ojisan, obasan, ojiisan, and obaasan when used that way for older people being translated directly is OK to me though.

So here's a question for people more familiar with japanese culture, why does Hinata refer to Kai as Kai-kun? Hinata pretty clearly hates Kai and Kai definitely hates him. Isn't Kai-kun way too familiar of an address? My understanding is that first name plus kun would generally indicate that you're on really friendly terms with someone.

Maybe they were friends in the past, but like how pathetic would you have to be to continue to refer to someone in a friendly manner even as they turn your life into hell. I just quickly skimmed through the early chapters and they are very clearly NOT friends. Hinata's at best a victim of Kai's bullying turned into a grunt.
kun is about as default as you can do between classmate. It doesn't really imply any social distance.
Friendly term would be no suffix, but the bully would definitely not allow that.
san would be the respectful term. Since MC didn't go that far, it means he still had some dignity.

What I can see is more like Tonfa Girl who holding two apex become more controlled.

Well, I prefer Hinata dating both of them. But knowing Japanese Law, it's hard for polygamy
