Based on his inner monologue in ch4, I speculate that he made the same mistake as the reporter, going gambling with borrowed money while being emotionally unstable in hope of making a quick buck to recover his failing family business and that backfired badly. He had to run away and changed his name so likely there're very angry people looking for him. This is japan, so fat chance is there'd be shady people harassing his wife as well, so he really cant maintain regular communication with them. I have a feeling at this point the monthly bank transfer is the only link they have right now. Yamada's situation is just as desperate as he say.
