I'd go for collecting loose rocks as makeshift weapons/tools. They mentioned a tree back at spawn, so either they break it down some to make some protective wear, or try attacking what I assume they'll become if they don't get to the portal fast enough.
I think Kaoru is being too bold as they don't know how many revives they have, I would've waited for them to leave so I could loot the corpse/take the crucifixes as a weapon. With the food problem, it's either "resetting", of which we don't know the limits of, going back to spawn and eating what's there, or the "unsavory" option.
