Honestly, if you manage to translate puns (or concepts based heavily on language, like here), and it still works, pat yourself on the back. That's hard.
While I'm not Japanese, what I know of their culture is that backchanneling is more frequent and intrusive (for us, at least) than it is in the Western world. In this case, it gives a strong impression that while he's the one talking the most, she's the one leading the conversation, since she's also asking questions to get him to speak more.
Of course, something that isn't mentioned here is that he's definitely not talking too much. She's consistently encouraging him to speak more, so he's not speaking over her or dominating the conversation in any way she'd be uncomfortable with.
She still sucks at the art of conversation, but she's learning. And she's good enough for him.
