It's quite shocking how absurdly traditional Japan is in this regard. I do not see rhyme nor sense in this, nor why it had taken them so very long to adapt to the standard of every civilized country in the world.
Good news is that it was a bit over a year ago that joint custody finally became legalized in Japan. And luckily, in the case of already divorced couples where custody had been granted to a single parent, either parent can now go back to court and have that decision overturned under the new law.
But naturally, it's gonna' take quite some time until this becomes the norm, or even not frowned upon.

Ps. Fuck the ex-husband.
Oh that's some great news. Japan is so incredibly conservative in some of the most surprising ways at times, I didn't ever think child custody would be one of them.

God speed to all those parents getting visitation and custody re-arrangements now.
