Not saying it's not just a bad translation, but it is a common trope for some guys to be so clueless they can't tell men from women.

And just as an aside, Shimoda does look and dress rather feminine and has earrings. So it's not to far of a stretch for an old Buddhist monk to have outdated notions of cultural trends and assume only women wear jewelry in their ears.
