I love this. Inexplicable rituals are so much fun. Just knowing that something is wrong, but not knowing why is so compelling. Bonus points if everyone is in on it for no explicable reason.

While this on its own is a really nice balance of realism and horror, I can’t help but think that the protagonists of Ura Baito would do their part and fulfill this job to the fullest, with all the potentially gruesome outcomes it might incur. That sort of horror is also entertaining in its own right!

i get needing the money but other than enjoying the social appeal to it and such, feels like working a job even part time in the middle of college would be draining too

(tho dang even if it's takeout i imagine sushi is still a step above in price compared to pizza)

oof sounds tedious but i wonder how many ppl would forget/move on, tho i wonder if it'd affect some 'scifi'/futuristic thing if a DBH like android was in charge of it and followed the orders without question, though you'd think they'd also call an exorcist rather than leaving it to some housesitter unless they planned to sacrifice them from the start

I like this one a lot. I like the uncertain ritual and lack of answers. Is the fan there to re-create some specific conditions for the haunting...? Is it there to cover up for the haunting? Why the shooting range type toys? No real way to know. And looking into it would probably cause nothing but problems.

I thought the kid died in there since there are toys for the "ritual", and fans? Pretty elaborate "fuck you" suicide or maybe those are the wards else shit gonna be even more nasty.

This is another story that isn't necessarily scary, but it makes me feel uneasy and strangely melancholic.

What kind of people were the family that lived here, that they couldn't be bothered to try to properly put this woman to rest, and instead made this ritual that seems to have just been about making sure the ghost stayed in that room by blowing the "body" around? Was the ghost mostly leaving the boys alone because she knew they had nothing to do with the family, but at the same time was bothered they were doing the ritual? Will the people who move in at some point in the future try to help her pass on properly?

We're never gonna know, and that gives this one a real "Mimi's Ghost Stories" kind of feel.

This was during summer break so most students get summer jobs. Even if they don't need the money they still need to build up work experience.

I see, i suppose 'surviving a haunted house' is impressive but that's just inviting ppl in to give you more 'supernatural' related jobs lol

Although i feel like if they try to check it'll mysteriously disappear or the houseowners would be dead and not be able to give you a good 'reference' (tho makes me wonder if ppl don't just 'house sit' for their relatives/neighbors or so as an 'easy' way to get 'experience' [although other jobs would prolly require more unless it was like elderly patient car])

This one was actually pretty creepy.
Seriously, the built up, the slow sense of dread, the creepiness of the situation all culminating in that perfectly executed jumpscare. My god I read this at 3 in the morning and had to open the lights. Holy hell I doesn't get scared like this much. The face is so creepy. The uncanny feeling it generated is something else. Wow

Something to consider is that summer is classically the period in Japan where ghosts are said to return to the world of the living so there's some added depth to the season in which this chapter takes place.

While they're not cursed at all, it's still creepy

*what if they completely stayed and reached the final day "?"

"What, you've never seen a woman hanging out and enjoying herself before? Fuck off!" was the vibe I got from the ghost. She was definitely more pissed off about the guy peeking than the guys being there in the first place. This lends credence to the guy rationalizing that one of the conditions for the ritual to work is that there has to be living people in the house. Perhaps if the house is totally empty she will try harder to leave and seek the house owners?

IMO the ghost was the son's lover. It is likely she committed suicide (or perhaps the family even killed her) in that room and her grudge allowed her to haunt the family, possibly with her powers getting the strongest around the time of her death's anniversary each year, hence the house-sitters only getting hired for summer. The ritual is seemingly designed to keep her confined to the spot where she hung herself whenever she manifests, and it does work to an extent. But, it is obvious that she is still getting stronger anyway, since she was able to leave the ritual room and troll the two sitter dudes, if only weakly. And now that the dudes totally failed the ritual, she has become strong enough to manifest during daylight hours and even leave the room. RIP houseowners.

The son probably didn't know about the ritual which is why he was pissed off by the house sitters calling his parents at night, and his parents told him the truth afterwards which caused him to make that apologetic second phone call.

The shooting game prizes might have been memorabilia collected by the woman or the son which serve as a reminder of her earthly life and were used to bind her to the room, and perhaps the prizes have to remain standing upright so she will be too busy knocking them all down to leave the room. Another condition of the ritual is that no one is allowed to see it - which might explain why she immediately was able to leave her spot to scold the guy peeking through the window.
