Wait was Roland an automata too or did she just turn him into barbecue?
Also yeah... I mean a creator usually doesn't spend that much time on noncombatant things if the goal is to become the best automata. If that were the case she'd have to prove it having tea ceremony contests not fighting. It is rather tragic she misinterpreted her "mother's" last words that much.
I think here we have a surprise reveal that Roland is an automata.
If I remember right, Roland isn't present in the web novel, so I can't tell for sure.
Spurred on by petty jealousy again? Pfft...these kinds of characters are so tiresome. I can't even complain about how he died. So I suppose that now the author is going for an attempted redemption arc for the confused automata, where they'll somehow talk her down. Otherwise Reiko could've simply taken her head in one panel while she was screaming.
Yeah pretty sure Rolan's petty jealousy saw her insecurity and shaped her into the piece of shit she's become, pushing her to believe that her mother's statement meant the best automata, and the way to prove that was through destroying the world or some bs.

She gets beaten to a pulp and then get her memories modified, no talking involved.
At least in the Novel, the manga has had a few things changed, for example most of her backstory was not revealed untill after they wrecked her.
I don't think that was just a simple misinterpretation. I think Roland brainwashed Elena or something. In ch 44, when Elza was about to give Elena a wake up call, he shut her up to keep Elena from realizing.

It's been a while, and he was ultimately a side character.
But if i recall...
TL: DR he is just super zealous because of the brainwashing that he would throw his own cult leader under the bus if they abandoned the mission.
He was under the effect of Elena´s brainwashing and was cured of it.
Not the other way around, but while under the brainwashing his goal was to lead the group.
And if Elena were to ever start doubting herself, he would enforce her old belief because it would be detrimental to the group if its founder started doubting the mission.
Elena mind was unstable, and she is the original antagonist.
MC more or less brainwashes Elena and fixes her "some" of her problems as well as realeased all the other brainwashed people.
The group was disbanded and some of the member later remade the group to become a hidden cabal.
( But i forgot its name )
The cabal´s main goal is to advancing the technology level of the world without starting a war.
And with the help of the MC ( under the MC´s fake name "Deus ex Machina" )
They start to spread beneficial technology around to better survive another human/deamon war in case it ever hapend again.
Becouse its right about now deamons are going to start showing upp in the story and they have some crazy strong magic powers.
This is why humanity basiclly made a magical nuke that removed allmost all "aether"
( the sorce of magic)
From the air to get rid off them in the past.
As deamons needs magic to survive unlike humans, this made most of them die out.
But it also made humanity to fall into a dark age which is why MC has better technolgy then everone else other then Elena and the Unifers who is a relic of the past age before the war.
