I call BS on this world having rice, but not knowing how to cook it, and mostly using it as animal fodder. If there's one thing that humans have proven time and time again throughout history, it's that they're really good at killing each other. If there's two things, then it's that humans can and will find whatever is edible in their environment, and figure out how to prepare it. That might involve mashing it and letting it rot, then inventing distillation to get the alcohol out, or it might involve triply boiling it with lye, or it might involve burying it for a year while soaked in urine, or even using something as a spice that we see kill other animals (all real things for certain foods, by the way) but we'll be damned if we let something tasty not get eaten, and eaten well.
