The author didn't say it was an ending, he simply said it's over and all but spelled out that the MC is just gay. This is closure for the author, the satisfaction of the reader was not the intended goal.

Given the author's comments and Akira's reaction Akira definitely seems to be both bi and in love with his bestie in either form. Just the female one is way more upfront about it due to heteronormativity and also the slight differences in their personalities meaning she's way more LET'S FUCKING GOOOO to his timidity.
Can't tell if the mascot and the slight sweat means his friend was bsing completely or if yeah he doesn't feel romantic or sexual love at all for his friend in either form snd wuickly put together the dots in addition to his friends clear disappointment. Or maybe some mix of all the above.
Having said thst while the ending was rsther abrupt and weak at least it got one. And I have enjoyed my time with it so I won't ding it too hard.

It's not a conclusive ending, but it definitely wraps up more then you guys are giving it credit for, imo.
Since a magical girl's power comes from love, the fact that bff was able to beat the monster easily after it beat the mc's ass implies that he loves the mc even more than what we've seen so far.
He's also clearly lying and nervous about it at the end, as has been pointed out, so I think it's safe to say that they're mutually in love and that this is an implied eventual happy ending.
I would have liked closure on whether or not the mc was a girl/would end up staying that way, which seemed to be implied as it went on, or if it was just that being a girl forced him to confront the fact that he likes guys, but I'm fine with something like this just reaching a stopping point and I'm not bothered by the note it left us on, personally
