Like I said in a previous chapter comments -- Ayame's gender identity isn't really relevant to the story all that much... (he seems to be happy being whatever people need him to be)

... but oh my god, Shion. Sniffing another girl and calling her natural smell a perfume that should be for sale?? Yeah, this girl ain't straight. Which is just fine but oh my Ayame's got some new duties as a magical girl if helping Shion explore those feelings is on the docket.

That's how Ayame is wired at the moment. You might call it wretched, but it's not an uncommon mindset in many parts of Japan. (where the self/ego isn't really a priority versus what you can be for your community)

It could make interesting conflict later though, if Shion goes too far with her awakening desires. Or if indeed Ayame's anxiety about rejection leads him to going along too far with it.
