That's how Ayame is wired at the moment. You might call it wretched, but it's not an uncommon mindset in many parts of Japan. (where the self/ego isn't really a priority versus what you can be for your community)
It could make interesting conflict later though, if Shion goes too far with her awakening desires. Or if indeed Ayame's anxiety about rejection leads him to going along too far with it.
