That’s just because of the modern world we live in, go back a few hundred years ago and it was fairly common to have soup served in a hollowed out loaf of bread. Because before modern baking techniques, day old bread would be as solid as a rock and if that was all you could afford then certain solutions would be required to make it palatable. But that all changed a 100 years ago and now white bread is the stuff commoners eat and rye is what the upper class consume.

Well you see it’s because Mai-chan’s mum dead prior to the beginning on this story. (That’s why she lives in a broken family).

But before she died she imparted her knowledge of cooking into daughter. (Although not entirely relevant it is worth noting for those that have never lived alone, it doesn’t matter if your a 3 Michelin starred chief you are simply not going to put effort into cooking if you are just cooking for yourself.)

This is a manga about Mai-chan re-enacting recipes her mum taught her because with onee-san present she has the motivation to put the effort in to make beautiful meals!
