They prance around the topic like it's both nothing and something at the same time, and by FAR it's Aoyagi's worst trait purely because it's an unknown. Bro needs therapy plan and simple. All he had to say if he didn't want to be popular was some half hearted "Anyone would do it." line and move on. There is absolutely no healthy reason for him to go OUT OF HIS WAY to be hated by others. It's like some form of self-punishment clearly long after anyone can even be bothered to remember whatever happened. That's not okay. How many Manga protagonists would lose all their protag points if they just had present parents who took them to a therapist after some "traumatic" event. Heck, everyone should go to a therapist occasionally (like a check up, our emotional health is important too). Especially if you're a Manga protag.

You'll likely get the first crumbs in around 5-6 chapters, if not too much content is skipped from the source. There's a lot of monologue/dialogue-heavy stuff to get through first, though.

I'm enjoying this. Sure the fact that we still don't know either of their stories and only get drip-fed tiny clues about him, and absolutely nothing about her living in Japan with her five year old sister with no parents, while she goes to high school... But, apart from that, I am enjoying it

I'm not sure if it's been brought up recently in the manga, but it's not no parents. The girls came over with their mother; she's been pretty absentee ever since, however (and that'll be important another couple of arcs down the road). Charlotte's backstory will be addressed much more fully after Aoyagi's troubles get addressed directly (if only at a surface level) for the first time.

Aoyagi fucked up the soccerbuddy's leg because he was "too good" at everything, then withdrew to avoid competition entirely. I empathize with this, long ago I hurt someone playing flag football and have never played sports since without being cajoled or coerced. I no longer find competition to be fun, because of it. Just a chore. If it's not enjoyable; it's easier to make excuses and play the bad/indifferent guy so you're not involved. Especially when one thinks the rest of the group will eventually tire of trying to compete against you. Basically everyone has that friend that's way too good at mario kart/party and only infuriates the rest. Soon enough, house rules get put in place, "bobby isn't allowed to throw bananas!", and it's easier to just avoid the whole situation if it can be easily foreseen. Back in my day it was fighting games, Streetfighter, Mortal Kombat, and Killer Instinct that would end friendships. Everyone hates the guy that wins matches by spamming lowkick.

It's that kind of trauma.
