My guess is that he accidentally injured someone on his soccer team, and that's why he didn't go to nationals when the rest of the team did. The team then lost and everyone blamed him for it.

Though, we're actually as far into the manga as I got in the LN before I got distracted by other things, so the second half of that spoiler is just speculation on my part.
