It was sort of a Romeo and Juliette situation, but without the romance (and deaths). Her family did not like us being friends, so we had to keep it on the down low. Not sure if that is better or worse than any manga trope. :-/

Surprisingly toughtfull? Girl when u got scared bc of the guys fighting he stopped them and made them apologize to you, care to remember? Also this story goes downway all the time like he always stays out of sight gives up credits willingly, not even talking with lottie in school. Always keeping himself back from thinking a relationship with her and so on (lottie does the same too which makes it double trouble). It started to get annoying and only thing that saves this manga is Emma's presence.
