I think the explosion was an exaggeration by the author, to make it funny or create tension.
But what must have happened was that he put the hot milk in the cold mug and the temperature difference broke the mugs.

Iruma clearly never had the privilege of using a microwave oven before then, and a demon microwave can make anything, not just eggs, explode.

Also, Waffleidle, is that last page in the correct order, or should it have been during Opera's flashback? It seems good either way, but the last page text on top of SD-Sullivan made it seem like it was out of order.
