When I started the OG story of Iruma... not in a million years could I have guessed that I was reading a story that, despite its goofiness, has some of the best characterization and emotional depth I have ever read.

And the fact that these same characteristics translated to this spin-off to a degree that I find ridiculously high (and even enhancing the original), is simply.... mindboggling.

Many of the parts of the dialogue are pretty "cliche", you could understand the theme of the story and arcs just in the introduction very easily... but the way they are implemented, how do I say this... even in the OG there is a darkness that lurks beneath the surface, a tension of a world that has secrets and machinations we are still trying to fully understand.

In this Mafia AU... that darkness was dialed way up... but the characters are still the "same", there is no distortion in them, they are the "same" but at the same time entirely different.

I already wrote many comments praising this spin-off, at this point, it may be getting a little annoying, but... this is simply a very special accomplishment, to a story that I think very much deserves that.

I see too many cynical "adaptations", made with the obvious intention of exploiting the "franchise", so when I discover something made with clear love for the original story like this one... it just warms my heart.

Ready for Purson to show up... err, not show up. Being an assassin is to easy of a role to write him into. Aside from being involved with music, can't think of anything.... Maybe he has been there all along, playing background music while they were eating meals in the dining room of the estate?

Yeah, I'm skipping the rest of the classroom cast for now.

I don't think that it's the same character exactly, it's more like they copied them and started messing with all the knobs and dials. This picks some core aspect of their personality and focuses on it, sometimes adding new elements to them or dropping traits that aren't as relevant to the story they're trying to tell. It's really impressive character writing that the author can distort a preexisting character but not go to far off model to the point it becomes unrecognizable and sometimes even improve upon them. Every character has been handled really well. Maybe most impressive of all is that nobodies pissed, the fact that there's an adaptation to a popular property and nobody has threatened to firebomb the creators house is a genuine accomplishment in this day and age.

I had assumed he'd be more of a spy or thief. He just doesn't seem like the violent type.

I love how gruff Kalego and Balam friendship is in this AU. Like the main series, I wonder if they know each other before they assume their current roles.
Az being a pseudo younger brother is adorable~ I wonder what a family swap AU would be like among the soulmates~
and the splash art is just beautiful... Iruma's coat has an interfacing that makes it look like wings. Alice in black and blue is absolutely striking! the blue collar is so dramatic[ ] and the bouquet having a dewy web is inspiring me to try making something irl.
Thank you for bringing us this extra .

Balam feels quite a bit different here! More jaded and tired, and there's less of that nerdy side of him...

I wonder about that, OG Purson wanted to stand in the spotlight, to feel seen... I guess his Mafia version will keep his spying talent, but maybe he'll be reluctant about it?
In any case, we just got an arc involving a spy, so I doubt there'll be much more spying soon (I'm ready to be proven wrong though).

I bet on Lied being a hacker of sorts
