I guess the one at fault is the author for failing to illustrate how harsh the reality of the Demon World is. (At least for the many ears). Because most of the commenter of this forum really are missing the same point that Nova is, the reality of Demon society.
We keep following Iruma in school (a safe environnement) in a class named "misfits", where they are the exception, not the rule.

I was watching a video in the background and had to pause it because I was getting so angry. Like, legit forcing your clan to remain in a box because you don't have faith in your own people. And yes I get that there is probably a lot of history showing that many ears have tried and failed but you don't you don't stomp out the future out of fear. This chapter had me fuming.

yeah, but i get where the elder is coming from.

my family have no legacy, but IF my family have an established business, let's say a restaurant that's been successful from my great-grandfather's time, i sure as hell will study something relating to it. maybe management, maybe cooking, maybe bartending. but something i can use.

now if between me and my many cousins(presumably) there is ONLY one or two who want to pursue something different like working the finance sector, for example. i'm sure the family elders won't mind. after all said cousin can, possibly, help the restaurant in 1 way or another. but if ALL the 'next generation' want to depart from the restaurant family business, that's another story entirely. because that means the perfectly good restaurant will go to ruin.

Legacy is a thing. like it or not.
I’m Jewish. I get it.

I’m the first person in my family like in generations to Jew things (long story), and my stepkid isn’t jewish so it ends here (🤷‍♀️), but 3000 years of beautiful history from Moses to Sandy Koufax… you’re Gddam right I’m livin’ in the fuckin’ past! I’m not-!

Times change, and it’s important to change with them, but don’t abandon the past! To continue with your hypothetical scenario:
The menu can’t stay exactly the same, and the decor may need updating, there’s certainly no smoking section anymore…
but you can’t just uproot everything and change it to another restaurant! That’s arrogant, imo. That sort of thing happens over time.

Judaism is not the same as it once was. Even the Ultra-Orthodox aren’t doing things the same as we did way back, no matter how yeshivish they are.
Hasidism is only a couple hundred years old! People needed a more spiritual practice in some communities, so things changed.
Some people needed XYZ sort of practice so there’s other branches and yadda yadda yadda.

These people should keep their ears open, but they don’t need to shut everything else out.

Okay but like...aint that kinda dumb?
Like, correct me if im wrong, shouldnt it be better to divulge into other talents than just the one your family is known for?
The fact that Nova exist proves that it will more than likely happen again, or even worse it can be forced upon one of them. Following the Elder's logic, if you arent able to use your talent your race is known for, then your worthless.
Its so obvious that Iruma will change the guy's thinking, thus allow the kids to start to learn magic again. Especially when Elder's point is just...stupid.
How long has the Many-ears existed in The Netherworld? Do you think that hasn't been done before? Then again, there was seemingly a Demon King that was a many-ears and was served by Mephistopheles. It's not completely unfeasable that the author will go down the shounen route.

So he can't hear and he is being taught skills to make him balance everything out and you wanna stop that so he can keep being considered a crippled amongst your people who are treated horribly...talk about getting used to your abuse and forcing others to accept it as well

I fully understand the leader concerns because if theirs is no way to guarantee the success of those kids especially if it’s not their talent but that doesn’t justify shutting down growth especially nova this is kinda a messed up anology but he claims that hearing is their only talent so him saying it’s hopeless to the kid who in his eyes essentially has no way of living is saying you need to accept this your disabled and this is your life. Excuse me!? What the hell is wrong with him

Yeah... it's super racist to say "Only do what you people are good at". Like because you're born a certain way, you have to do this? Really dumb. It's the same argument people used to oppress people for so long, like saying black people are "only good for hard labor" or women are "only good for children" or single fathers shouldn't try to play the "mom role". The people discriminated against even start to believe it themselves and crush their ambitions thinking it's the only way they can survive. I hate this bioessentialism it's a real plague on the world.

Even if they fail, they should have the right to do it on their own terms. In the long run, you can only be happy if you're free, because the shackles will weigh you down too much and drag you to Hell.
