I especially enjoyed the vibes of this chapter -- a bunch of broken girls that can't open up to each other but can't live apart either...

I mean it’s possible, but we already saw a brief overview of Tama’s life after the Witch Hunt in the first chapter, described by a few mini panels and there’s not much depressing stuff back then (and the volume cover even has the words “Everyday Comedy” on it), so I don’t think Tama has that much “Traumatized past”, or at least she has the least trauma of them all.

I said it before in another comment, but I see this manga as a Doubled Down Dark version of “Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid”, in which the magical characters have to adapt to the modern human world while trying to find themselves, and while the undertone is dark (with their past and personalities and all), the characters have love (sometimes even the goofy kind) and happiness among them, plus the occasional Ecchi and cute moments.

Plus this is irrelevant, but the art is just so pretty and stylish. The Mangaka really improved a lot since the last “Yona Yona Yona” series and “Reki and Yomi”, so needless to say I am also greatly anticipating the next chapter.

His first published oneshot actually got called a rip off of Kobayashi's Dragon Maid.

Also anyone who's read to this point and thinks there's going to be some super convoluted edgy twist involving rape or slavery and their supply chain and such doesn't get the mindset of Shibata Kouhei. He may have drawn gore, haha rape and suggested serious rape before, but the bottom line is always girls being cute, stylish and optimistic. If there's going to be a dark twist and not simply a reveal, since Shien's obviously hiding things, it'd follow a straightforward emotional through line, not some overcomplicated melodrama like in those manga (usually battle and fantasy) that try to drag out the plot with convoluted background stories disguising as depth just to last a bit longer. Mode's past is a prime example, short, simple, consistent, straight to the point, and hits hard, but there's light at the end.

Got it, and as a fan of his works, I can’t say I’m surprised. (“a rip off of Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid” is new though!)

And I honestly think that kind of short, simple, consistent…all that stuff is the key to gain good likes for the story. I personally see this manga as a way to build characters as they work towards their goal of living well together, and making good medicine to help folks. Then as we learn about the witches, we learn about their history, their culture, the world they live in, all that worldbuilding and character development and feelings just came naturally. The tragic backstory is one way things could go, but unnecessary for this one.

And I need to say that Shibata Kouhei really has a unique and powerful sense of humor told through wacky, stylish, cute characters while being straightforward. Gets me every time.

Seriously, complicated background stories is nice and all, but there’s only so much things that could actually happen in the past. The far past consequences (and oh so mysterious ones) coming to bite the MC in the ass gets tiring pretty fast.

You can tell an excellent story with many things being pretty straightforward while letting the audience feel things themselves. And just like“ Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid”, it has tons of potential. I would love to see it explore to its heart’s content, and last longer than all his previous series.

(and I realized that this manga received a significant boost in followers (4k) here and overall score (about 0.05) since the last big update, that’s pretty cool!)

it's really makes sense. not only they have to worry about whether they can stay alive from that infamous witch hunt event, but also they have to hiding themselves. in fear they might get hunted again. that's already so hard for those good hearted witches. they also worried of those dear people around them might been died too. if they really died, then they the only one who still alive in this cruel and empty world. they can't even communicate with each other, in fear getting hunted again. I'm really feeling how hard they live after being hunted......

My personal guess about events of Tama's life after the Night of Witch Hunting (or rather the lack of them) is directly related to Shien and if my guess is right, it's a

Shien was caught, interrogated and tortured in order to get whereabouts of the other witches, which she gave out in order to protect Tama, telling that she was just a random customer and not a witch. Then, likely, she was given a chance for redemption on a terms of public rejection and condemnation of the ways of the witchcraft as a former witch, so no other people would ever have a deal with any of witches, which she accepted as alternative to execution.

That gave her such crippling mental trauma that now she has to constantly smoke her special "happy dream" medicine to ease her mental pain and self-loathing, just in order to stay borderline functional.

Of course, everything is my personal guess.
