So much the use of word 'Avant-garde' that i dont understand the meaning of that word anymore... doesn't it mean 'something soooo BAD/STRANGE/UNUSUAL that it start to feel like its good' ? I learn it from TWGOK when Keima try to capture the super-sweet-slash-absurd-ramen-loving girl.

The eye treatment makes me wonder if they forgot the disclaimers or we should now go and do that at home.

@refki, nah, avant garde refers to like, abstract or cutting edge art, idk why they're using that in this translation, I think they mean like, fashionably ascetic?

I wonder how many people die from the fermenting cedar spontaneously combusting on them?

I lost it at "wasn't it just some sort of candy"!

Avant garde is originally a military term for those who go before the main force: scouts, pathfinders, perhaps engineers who clear the way. In art it originally referred to those who tried to find new ways of artistic expression. That was 200 years ago. Nowadays it is used as a label to indicate something is "new" and appeal to the "be the first on the block" crowd. So yeah, hipsters pretty much. (More than a little ironic it is used to promote "ancient wisdom" like ayurveda and feng shui. I never could get the hang of marketing).

@HDMI1 Or from the fumes and mold spores... I'm a chemical engineer with a basic understanding of microbiology: you won't find me in one of those coffins!

No, avant-garde is something totally original and new. For something to be avant-garde, it has to be something that challenges the cultural or artistic norm. The ayurvedic massage she got in this chapter, for example, is the exact opposite of avant-garde since it's a traditional practice from ancient times.

... But that's the joke here, isn't it? She has no idea whatsoever what avant-garde is, lol.

Bit of late reply, you probably won't see it but, it's 100% legit BUT it's translation error, that's not technically butter but ghee.

Indeed, they form a dough like "glasses" around eyes as a form and pour pure warm ghee, after it reaches body temperature you're supposed to open eyes for a minute or two.
It's scary at first, you might figure it may damage your eyes, but it's not only harmless but will soothen strained eyes.

Easier is just to use ghee rich balm around eyse once in a while, same effect, less hipster "avant-garde".
